Lithium-ion is the newer, pricier option — but "newer and pricier" doesn't automatically mean "right for you." Here's how the two actually compare, so you can make the call with your eyes open.

The short version

Lead-acid batteries cost less upfront and are a proven, well-understood technology. Lithium-ion costs more to buy but needs almost no maintenance, weighs a fraction as much, and lasts significantly longer — which often makes it cheaper over the life of the cart, not just at the till.

Upfront cost

Lead-acid wins here, plain and simple. If you're on a tight budget or only need the cart for occasional use, a good quality lead-acid set is still a sensible, reliable choice.

Maintenance

This is where lithium pulls ahead. Lead-acid batteries need regular watering, terminal cleaning, and equalising charges to stay healthy — skip that upkeep and you'll shorten their life fast. Lithium batteries need essentially none of that: no watering, no terminal corrosion, no deep-cleaning every few months.

Weight and performance

Lithium batteries are dramatically lighter than lead-acid — often less than half the weight. That translates into a cart that accelerates better, handles hills more comfortably, and puts less strain on the rest of the drivetrain over time.

Lifespan

A well-maintained lead-acid battery set typically lasts a few years before capacity drops off noticeably. Lithium batteries commonly last several times longer, even with heavier use, because they don't suffer the same sulfation and deep-discharge damage that shortens lead-acid life.

Which should you choose?

• Choose lead-acid if: budget is the main concern, the cart sees light or occasional use, and you're comfortable with basic regular maintenance.
• Choose lithium if: you want to fit-and-forget, you're running the cart hard or often (golf estates, fleets, daily use), or the total cost over several years matters more than the number on the initial quote.
